How to measure a window screen for replacement
If the old screen fits, measure the outside width and height of its frame. Check near the corners, where a bowed frame is less likely to distort the reading. Enter the width first and record dimensions to the nearest 1/16 inch.
For a custom window screen order, also note the frame thickness, mesh type and the location of spring clips, pull tabs and any crossbar. A close-up photo helps the supplier identify how the screen mounts.
How to measure for a missing window screen
Find a matching window with a screen that fits. Measure the target opening, the reference opening and the outside dimensions of the reference screen. Use the same measuring points on both windows.
For example, if a 30-inch opening takes a 29 7/8-inch screen, a matching 30 1/2-inch opening gives an estimated frame width of 30 3/8 inches. Confirm the fit with your supplier before ordering.
What to include on a window screen measurement worksheet
Give each window a room label and record how many screens share its size and hardware. The worksheet identifies measurements taken from existing frames and estimates for missing screens.
Download a CSV for a spreadsheet or print the worksheet with photos to share with a custom screen supplier.
